Int’l cyber security conference in Dhaka on Mar 9

The government in collaboration with global cyber security and tech giants is going to organise an international cyber security conference in Dhaka on March 9.

The aim of the conference is to take a coordinated initiative to check the alarming rise of cyber attacks causing disruption in online activities and financial loss, officials said, reports UNB.

They said Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) of ICT Division, US based Fire Eye, CISCO, CA Technologies and Microsoft and Norway based NRD CS will jointly organize the conference at the auditorium of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC).

State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak will inaugurate the conference, which is expected to be attended by diplomats, foreign cyber security experts and government officials.

The conference is being held to mark the one year completion of BDG CIRT (Bangladesh Government Cyber Incident Response Team) set up to mitigate a computer related incidents like malware, virus infection and other cyber related threats.

The State Minister said there should be coordinated approach to face the fast-growing cyber-crimes and attacks as in most cases the cyberattacks take place from outside the country.

“The involvement of the foreign countries and international stakeholders is a must to combat the fast-growing cyber attacks,” he said adding the government’s aim is to take a coordinated initiative through this conference to check cyber attacks and cybercrimes.

Director of National Data Center Tarique M Barkatullah said there should be mandatory physical security alongside putting in place properly trained numerous cyber security guards in each organisation to protect its cyberspace.

He said the international cyber security conference will also help take up a coordinated and comprehensive action to face the cyber attacks and cyber-crimes. Global Cyber Security Experts from NRD CS, NRD Bangladesh Ltd, CA Technologies, Microsoft Bangladesh Ltd, CISCO Technologies Bangladesh Ltd, One World USA & FireEye will share the latest threats and mitigation to learn how to increase their cyber resilience, and the ways to collaborate with BGD e-GOV CIRT, he added.

Tarique Barkatullah who is also Deputy Project Director of LICT Project said the World Bank-financed LICT project of BCC has already provided training to about 2,000 government officials on e-government activities, including protection of cyberattacks, he said, adding the NRD CS has been appointed by LICT Project to enhance cyber security skills of government officials and provide support to Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT).
