In order to assist organisations in creating a secure digital environment in the East African region NRD together with ISACA Tanzania Chapter is organising a three-day conference with critical security controls or penetration testing trainings and vendor demonstrations for information security professionals, information systems auditors, IT risk professionals and IT enthusiasts. The Cyber Defence East Africa 2013 will take place on the 28th-30th August in Morogoro, Tanzania.

The importance of cyber security in East Africa is rising due to region’s rapid development – organisations are increasingly reliant on data and IT infrastructure’s availability. The main purpose of the event is to help organisations to get up to speed in information security and create a community of IT security professionals, prepared to protect their organisations’ information and handle security incidents appropriately.

This will be delivered in a form of intensive trainings, keynote speeches and introduction of state-of-art cyber security technologies from the biggest, industry leading cyber security vendors. In addition, the conference will include informal meetings, think tank sessions, and the Gala Dinner which will provide the participants with exclusive networking opportunities that could lead to new partnerships and business ventures.

The event will be opened by Hon Y January Makamba, MP in the Tanzanian National Assembly, who will deliver a speech on the cyber security in Tanzania from the Government perspective. Afterwards, the President of ISACA Tanzania Chapter, Mr. Boniface Kanemba will cover the role of ISACA (non-profit, international professional association focused on IT Governance) in promoting cyber security in Tanzania.

The trainings that follow will be delivered by experienced information security professionals and refer to the best security practices, standards of business ethics, legal regulations and principles of business continuity as well as real life examples.

When registering, the participants have to choose one of the two training tracks – critical security controls or penetration testing. The critical security controls training track will introduce the participants to the framework of 20 key actions that organisations should take to block or mitigate cyber attacks. These controls were compiled by a consortium of more than 100 contributors from US government agencies, global commercial forensics experts and penetration testers.

Penetration testing is a method of evaluating computer and network security by simulating an attack on a computer system or network from external and internal threats. This course will explain the basic steps behind penetration testing and includes use of vulnerability scanning, analysis tools, software exploits and social engineering techniques.
