KAUTRA, one of the largest passenger transport companies in Lithuania, is upgrading its onboard ticketing system to make travel more convenient for passengers and daily work easier for drivers – while also ensuring full compliance with national fiscal requirements.
The new solution meets the latest requirements of the State Tax Inspectorate (VMI). All ticket sales made on buses are now processed transparently and automatically reported in real time to the i.EKA system, Lithuania’s smart platform for monitoring fiscal data.
The need for the upgrade was driven by new regulatory requirements. To comply, KAUTRA had to adopt one of the available fiscalization approaches, such as virtual fiscalization or a security module. At the same time, the company aimed to ensure the solution would be practical and easy to use in daily operations.
One Device for Everything Drivers Need
NRD Companies developed a mobile point-of-sale (POS) solution that runs on a tablet and supports card payments through integration with Ashburn.
With this system, drivers can sell tickets directly on board and see all ticket information in one place – including tickets purchased online, at bus stations, or on the bus. This provides a clear, real-time view of passengers for each journey.
But the device does more than just ticketing. It acts as a central tool for drivers, allowing them to:
- validate tickets,
- track available and sold seats,
- see how many passengers are expected at upcoming stops,
- monitor how many passengers are expected to disembark at the current stop,
- monitor whether the bus is on time, early, or delayed.
Already Improving the Passenger Experience
The new ticketing system has already been introduced on KAUTRA buses and is being gradually rolled out across the fleet.
Since its launch, passengers have experienced a faster and smoother ticket purchasing process. Card payments are quick and convenient, ticket issuance is immediate, and the overall boarding process has become more efficient. At the same time, drivers can focus more on the journey itself rather than managing multiple systems.
The project is being implemented in stages – from initial analysis and MVP development to full deployment – with completion planned for summer 2026.
